Creating a Culture of Respect, Civility and Diversity: How to Address Sexual Harassment in the Workplace

Tony Fiore, Director, Government Affairs, Ohio State Council of SHRM and

Of Counsel, Kegler, Brown, Hill + Ritter, LPA (Columbus, OH)

Allegations of workplace harassment have captured headlines worldwide and the #MeToo movement has empowered employees to speak up.  From Harvey Weinstein to Matt Lauer no executive is immune from punishment or termination.  There is a vast gray area that exist between the legal line and bad behaviour that should not be tolerated, but doing the minimum to comply with state and federal employment will not be enough for workplaces in the 21st Century.  Written policies are only the starting point.  Your actions in dealing with allegations of sexual harassment speak louder than words.  Companies must create a culuture of respect, civility and diversty.  The negative impact that sexual harassment claims can have on a company can tarnish its reputation and make hiring more difficult in the future.  Tony will provide education and different strategies for training, policies and many other aspects of responding to inappropriate behaviors in the workplace for supervisors and HR professionals to help avoid liability on sexual harassment issues.

Workplace Application:  Learn how to be an effective HR advocate to affect public policy affecting your company.  This learning experience includes the importance of advocating against an issue that may negatively affect your workplace and increase your company’s cost of compliance or for an issue that will have a positive impact on your company.

    Learning objectives:

    1. Learning about sexual harassment issues that have captured headlines,

    2. Developing effective workplace polices to deal with allegations of sexual harassment, and

    3. Understanding how to create workplace culture of respect, civility and diversity.
